Ephedrine

Also known as: Ephedra, Ma Huang

Ephedrine is a sympathomimetic amine derived from the Ephedra plant. It has been widely studied for fat loss, especially in the ECA (ephedrine, caffeine, aspirin) stack. Banned as a dietary supplement in the US since 2004 but available as a nasal decongestant (Bronkaid, Primatene).

Mechanism of Action

Ephedrine stimulates the release of norepinephrine from sympathetic neurons and directly activates alpha and beta adrenergic receptors. This increases metabolic rate, suppresses appetite, and promotes lipolysis. When combined with caffeine, the thermogenic effect is synergistic due to inhibition of phosphodiesterase and prolonged cAMP signaling.

Dosing Research

Classic ECA stack: Ephedrine 25 mg + Caffeine 200 mg + Aspirin 81 mg, taken 2-3 times daily. Start with a single low dose to assess tolerance. Cycle 4-8 weeks on, 2-4 weeks off. Do not exceed 75 mg ephedrine per day.

Side Effects & Risks

Elevated heart rate, increased blood pressure, insomnia, anxiety, tremors, dry mouth, appetite suppression. Rare but serious: heart attack, stroke, and seizures, particularly at high doses or in predisposed individuals. Banned as a supplement due to cardiovascular adverse events.
